Soft Yarn and great price
I used Premier Basix Chunky to knit a cropped cardigan, combining US size 7 (for ribbing) and US size 10 (for the body). Here’s what I learned.
Why the two needle sizes work:
· The yarn holds ribbing beautifully on size 7s – tight, neat edges with no sagging.
· On size 10s, the fabric relaxes into a nice, drapey-but-sturdy texture. Not too stiff, not floppy. Perfect for an everyday cardigan that holds its shape.
Pros for this project:
· Lightweight feel for a chunky yarn – the final cardigan isn't heavy or sweaty.
· No splitting on size 10s – smooth glide, even with wooden needles.
· Washes well – I machine washed gentle/cool and laid flat to dry. No shrinking or fuzzing.
· Good stitch visibility – cables or simple stockinette both show clearly.
Watch out for:
· Gauge tension is critical. On size 10s, I got 12 sts/4" in stockinette. Swatch first – your gauge may differ.
· The fabric on size 10s has some openness (not see-through, but breezy). Best for lightly layered or indoor cardigans.
· If you want a denser, wind-resistant cardigan, stick closer to size 9. Size 10 gives drape but less warmth.
Final verdict: Great budget choice for a casual, everyday cardigan. Just swatch and block before committing. I'd use it again for a chunky open-front cardigan or long duster coat.
