Maker Spotlight: Andie from Myra and Jean

Here at Premier®, we love engaging with our makers to see their creations, learn more about who they are, and what inspires them. Our Maker Spotlight series highlights our makers and their passion for yarn.

This week's Maker Spotlight focuses on Andie from Myra & Jean. Andie uses our yarn in a unique way: Punch Needle Art. She uses a punch needle, monks cloth, and yarn to create colorful and fun creations. For the project featured here, Andie used Premier® Serenity Chunky, Puzzle, and Anti-Pilling Bamboo. Andie took the time to tell us more about punch needle art and her business, Myra & Jean.

Q:Tell us about yourself!

A: Myra & Jean was founded in 2017 when I lost my full time job and was trying to figure out what to do next. I never intended for it to become a business, but I’m so glad it did. Ever since I was little I loved crafts and making things with my hands. There’s nothing quite like a feeling of accomplishment when I make something myself!

Q: What made you pick the specific craft of Punch Needle Art?

A: I saw a video on Instagram and I was instantly hooked - pun intended. It was so intriguing and looked like a lot of fun and I knew I had to try it.

Q: How did you get interested in crafting in general? How did your craft evolve?

A: I’ve been making things ever since I can remember. Rumor has it I held a drill for the first time when I was 2. And I believe it! I was always helping my dad when he was redoing something in our apartment. He can do it all! He also taught me to using a sewing machine. As for my grandparents - one grandpa was a carpenter and the other a tailor. My grandma taught me how to knit and her sister how to crochet. I lost them all too soon, but they gave me great basics for crafts. Punch needle fell into my lap unexpectedly and when I was starting there weren’t many supplies available so I made a kit. And then I made another and another….And I’m forever grateful that I get to keep making them still.

Q: Who/what inspires you?

A: Everyday things. I never know what will motivate me to create a piece. It’s like a jolt of energy and I know at that instant what design I want to make.

Q: What is your favorite Premier Yarn? What do you love about it?

A: Goodness, that’s a hard question! There are so many to love! I tried the Serenity Chunky which punches like a dream and it’s the perfect thickness too! The puzzle and anti-piling bamboo are amazing as well and sooooooo soft. Too many exclamation points. I guess now you know how much I love them.

Q: What other hobbies do you enjoy?

A: I’m happy whenever I get to create. I love watercolor painting and sewing as well. But I don’t shy away from any project. Recently I tried wood carving and I love it. I’ve learned to appreciate all kinds of crafts and it’s opened up my creative world so much!

Q: What’s your favorite yarn project to make?

A: Right now it’s a punch needle cushion. I have not been very good at it, but thanks to help from some online friends (and your beautiful yarn) I now have the tools to make it just the way I like it.

Q: Where is your favorite place to craft?

A: I like to craft when I’m around my family. I have a studio/office, but when my son and/or my husband are at home I always move so I can be close to them. Sometimes that means crafting on a playground which I’ve done a million times now.

Q: Any tips for crafters?

A: Have fun! Don’t be intimidated to start and don’t expect to be perfect on your first try. Take it as a learning experience and you’ll have more fun that way :)
